I really enjoyed my February trip to ELWA! I would love to organize a tour group to Liberia. Let me know if you want to come along!

People in West Africa who spoke any of 46 different languages were able to hear their own broadcasts over ELWA during the decade of the '80s. But civil war in Liberia brought big changes in 1990.

ELWA was partially rebuilt and went back on the air with a local FM station in January of 1992. I helped add a shortwave broadcast transmitter in August of 1993, but all of the broadcasting facilities were destroyed by more fighting in May of 1996.
Joan was Principal at ELWA Academy, and I was chief engineer at radio station ELWA. Because we lived right on the beach, we enjoyed swimming and fishing in the Atlantic Ocean.
Originally French programs for Radio ELWA were produced next door in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. Before Joan and I could go and help them add an FM radio transmitter to the Abidjan studios, we studied French in Switzerland. We met many new friends there, and I also enjoyed learning to down-hill ski!
